More than 10 million Americans depend on it annually for treating blood clotting disorders, dialysis treatments for over 500,000 patients, and ECMO therapy for more than 10,000 individuals. Additionally, heparin and collagen-based products play a vital role in over 50 million surgeries each year, ensuring safer procedures and improved outcomes.
Chronic wound care is another area affected by this dependency. Over 6 million Americans suffer from chronic wounds, many requiring heparin or collagen-based treatments for healing. A supply disruption could lead to severe patient care issues and increased healthcare costs.
Reducing reliance on external sources is essential. Strengthening domestic production and securing supply chains are critical steps to ensure continued access to these life-saving medical products.

He is a retired senior infantry officer of the Defense Force of South Africa, retired founder and CEO of an international security and logistics company, a businessman, a mentor and a Christ follower. He was chairman of national and international committees, was decorated with various medals and awards for operational and civil duty, including being awarded the Legion of Merit medal by the USA for his role in the strengthening of relationships between South Africa and the USA.
